EcuadorNews:
With 83 votes in favor and 25 abstentions, the Agricultural Health Law was approved in the second debate and will be forwarded to the presidential office for its final approval or veto.
The project regulates the application of measures to promote good practices in the production and trade of plants, crop products, animals and their derivatives. Export growth is sought through quality.
Mauricio Proaño, Legislator of the Alianza Pais party, said that this initiative complements the basic framework for “the progress of the rural sector and the reduction of poverty rates in this area.”
Nevertheless, its approval showed resistance. In an article published in a website the NGO Acción Ecológica indicated that “the law has a strong orientation towards international trade in agricultural and livestock goods, so it may be part of the legal package Ecuador needs to adopt within the context of the Trade Treaty with the European Union.”
