The local tuna fishing bans also generate jobs
Closure periods reactivate jobs, especially companies that provide maintenance services to these vessels, like welding, painting, electrical systems, among others.
These activities fuel a bit more the economy of those sectors.
“There are many people who look forward tuna fishing bans to work two or three months in a row,” says Raul Paladines, president of the Puerto Atun company, who runs a private dock located in the Jaramijo are. About 20 ships use this dock.
At the docks of Puerto Atun and Puerto de Manta a fleet of tuna vessels can be seen while they are maintained. In this coastal area there are 112 vessels engaged in tuna fishing, which provide 80% of the raw materials needed by tuna industries.
