The Magap announced control of corn prices

The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture and Fisheries (Magap), Javier Ponce, announced last week that operations will be carried out in conjunction with staff of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the City Council and the National Police to monitor an alleged speculation created by certain intermediaries in the official price of hard corn.

The official said they have reports that say that corn is being stored in warehouses that have already been identified, one of them, in the town of Ventanas, in Los Rios province.

He said that the official price of a quintal of corn (43.36 kilograms) is $ 15.90.

“What we are facing is a serious speculation of hard corn,” said the official.

He added that in 2015 there was a production increase of corn of 11% (nearly 310,000 hectares), compared to 2014, while he ruled out a possible import of hard corn.

“We have not made any provision to import corn,” said Ponce, who added that the priority is to consume local products.
