The United States committs to working together with the new Ecuadorian president
“The United States congratulates the Ecuadorian voters for their participation in the national elections of February 19,” said Mark Toner, acting spokesman for the US State Department in a statement after hearing the results of the first round of the elections, held last Sunday, in which none of the contenders managed to get the minimum number of votes necessary to win the presidency.
On February 23, 2017, the United States pledged to work with the future leader of Ecuador and congratulated the National Electoral Council (CNE) for its work in the first round of presidential elections, which resulted in a second convocation for April 2
“We applaud the efforts of the CNE and the work of international observation missions. We will work with the future leader of Ecuador to foster cooperation between our two peoples and to strengthen ties between our two nations,” Toner added.
