Three sailors among 36 alleged drug traffickers at ports
Thirty-six people, including three members of the Navy were detained as suspected members of a criminal gang that recruited employees of the ports of Guayaquil to contaminate containers with drugs.
The operation, called Link 66, took place yesterday morning simultaneously in the provinces of Santa Elena, Pichincha, El Oro and Guayas. More than twenty homes were raided in towns and gated communities, according to the police.
In the raids seven luxury vehicles, imported firearms, ammunition, checks, approximately $ 40,000 in cash and 2.6 tons of drugs were seized.
According to the Interior Ministry, the organization counted on the cooperation of logistics personnel within ports, including three members of the Navy on active duty. It seems that boatmen worked with them, who were in charge of transporting the drugs to different tributaries of the estuary, especially to the quarantine area where the ships are, and the security guards of the boats, who received the alkaloid to contaminate containers.
