This disease, which has no symptoms, has increased between 40 and 50% in the past five years.
High blood pressure is the main factor that causes heart disease and stroke, which can result in death and/or disability. There is also a risk of kidney failure and blindness.
Nationwide there are 1,373 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants, as established by the Ministry of health in its Web page, which also indicates that in 2010 this disease was the first cause of mortality in the Ecuador.
Globally, according to the Word Health Organization, it is estimated that this disease is affecting more than one of every three adults , of 25 years old or older, approximately one billion people.
To reduce the risk factors, physicians recommend reducing intake of salt or eliminate it from their meals, follow a balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, grains and proteins; perform physical activities daily 15 minutes and to not consume tobacco or alcohol.
