Tons of exports crushed by prices
Posted On 25 Aug 2016

All standard export products, which attract more foreign exchange to the country, have seen their space reduced in foreign markets, both in tons and dollars. In other words, Ecuador sells less bananas, cocoa, coffee, tuna, canned fish and flowers, and these products are also sold at lower prices. And this space is occupied by competitors.
The reasons and those responsible, are nothing but a cocktail with many ingredients.
The economic authorities have repeated since last year that these are the ravages of a perfect storm: falling oil prices raised the dollar exchange rate and turned Ecuador into a more expensive country compared to its competitors.
“We must recognize that there is an external shock,” the new director of Proecuador Silvana Vallejo told yesterday to Daily Expreso. But she also requested the analysis of the figures on the decline in exports beyond money. “Yes, price fell, which makes that the value volumes decrease, but our metric tons, our market shares in most products has remained; ie despite the global crisis we have faced we ghave,” she stated.
