Two Waorani views faced in the IACHR
The main leaders of the Waorani Nationality of Ecuador (Nawe) expressed different views on the protection to the rights of peoples in voluntary isolation in the Amazon: the Tagaeri and Taromenane. Alicia Cahuiya was the first to be called as a witness in the ‘Case 12,979 of indigenous peoples in voluntary isolation Tagaeri and Taromenani,’ which entered the so-called ‘substantive stage’ in the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), which could later pass to the the Inter- American Court.
The Vice President of the indigenous organization considers that the exploitation of natural resources is the cause of conflicts that led to this demand: the massacres between Waoranis and Tagaeris and Taromenanes in 2003 and 2006. She explained this to Rose Marie Antonine, president of the board, who received the Ecuadorian delegation. This was the only of the four hearings held yesterday to which the state sent representatives.
