Ukrainian parliament approves law that generates sanctions against Russia
On Thursday, the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) of Ukraine adopted a draft law that gives the green light to the imposition of up to 29 types of sanctions against Russia, which include the posibility to prohibit the transit of hydrocarbons that Moscow exports to Europe.
The project received the votes of 244 deputies, 18 more than the needed for its approval.
The law authorizes the adoption of sanctions against countries, companies and individuals who support or finance terrorism in the country. This law has yet to be passed by the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.
Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk explained that if sanctions are applied against a country, the respective presidential decree must be ratified by the Rada.
For the imposition of sanctions against companies and individuals a resolution of the Council of National Security and Defense (CSND) will be sufficient, which must be endorsed by the head of state.
