UN and EU do not recognize the elections held in eastern Ukraine
The deputy spokesman of the United Nations (UN), Farhan Haq, described as “useless” the elections held last Sunday at Donbass, in eastern Ukraine.
“The UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon said recently that these elections will be useless, a position which still stands,” Haq said in an interview with the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.
For its part, the European Union (EU) through its High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Federica Mogherini, will also accuse of “illegitimate” the elections, adding that these will not be recognized by the EU.
“I think the ‘presidential and parliamentary elections’ held today (Sunday) in the Donetsk and Lugansk ‘People’s Republics’ represent a new obstacle to peace in Ukraine,” said Mogherini.
According to the European official, the vote goes against the “spirit” of the Minsk agreement, signed on September 5 between Kiev and the pro-Russian to end the fighting in eastern Ukraine.
