Unsanitary conditions in the most affected areas

A little more than four days after the earthquake, the biggest challenge in Pedernales is to prevent the development of an epidemic outbreak among the population. This area is where the greatest destruction occurred.

The risk of gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases due to the lack of drinking water, sewage destruction of the decomposing corpses, which is latent.

Also, the backwaters -whether in tanks or in certain abandoned sites- increase the risk of diseases by vectors such as zika, dengue fever and chikungunya.

Because of these conditions, since last Sunday, dozens of families have chosen to leave their homes and migrate to Guayaquil, Santo Domingo, Quito, among other places.
