In an interview with Daily Expreso, Hernan Perez, lawyer of daily El Universo, on the lawsuit against the Ecuadorian State, explains what his clients seek.
They are seeking that the Inter-American Court of Human Rights declares that the Ecuadorian State violated the American Convention on Human Rights by initiating criminal proceedings against the directors of the newspaper, the journalist and the company. Secondly, the financial compensation is sought.
“The petitioners do not aim to receive a financial compensation, but it is equally true that victims of human rights violations have the right to be economically repaired to the extent as possible. Finally, to create a precedent, so this does not happen again.”
The lawyer mentions that Messrs Perez attempted to reach an amicable agreement with President Correa, when the case was processed in Ecuador.
“If the state is interested in saving the process it should pose an amicable solution.”
In the coming months they will examine the process to see if they make some kind of remark.
