World Athletics has a New Hero
South African athlete, Oscar Pistorius starred in a historic participation as he became the first Paralympic athlete to compete against the best athletes of the world with non disabilities in the Daegu-2011 World Athletics which was his successful debut in 400 meters.
Pistorius finished the series achieving a score of 45 seconds and 39 hundredths, getting the 3rd place.
“Being here has been my goal for many years. (…) I worked extremely hard to be here and it has been phenomenal to run today,” said Pistorius, who suffered the amputation of both legs below the knees when he was only eleven months old.
His participation has caused controversy among his followers who support his struggle and initiative, and his opponents, who say that they favor prostheses and undermine the equality of all participants. Despite this Pistorius seek final 400 meters on Monday, with the dispute of the semifinals. (BG)
