Yasuní Could Be Exploited
Rafael Correa gave today an ultimatum to the international community in the Climate Change Summit in Cancun.
He warned that if the compensation requested is not received, next year the country will decide to exploit the oil of Yasuni National Park.
Ecuador’s proposal is to maintain indefinitely underground 846 million barrels of oil to avoid the production of CO2.
However the project needs support from the international community, the state asked to contribute at least with $ 3,600 million, equivalent to 50 percent of the resources that Ecuador would receive in case of opting for oil exploitation.
According to Correa, Yasuni “is the most concrete proposal of history that tries to fight against the climate change.”
Ecuador is willing to sacrifice the seven million dollars of profits that would generate the exploitation of these reserves; to help the climate change, said Correa.
“We’re talking about the survival of humankind and the planet,” expressed the President.
