YASunidos continues on legal struggle over signatures

Posted On 13 May 2014

During the next days the environmental group YASunidos will present its challenge resources to the National Electoral Council (CNE for its Spanish acronym) to reactivate its request for a referendum, to prevent the oil exploitation of the ITT fields in the Yasuni National Park.

However, the group must wait for a notification of the electoral body, after that on last Thursday the entity unanimously approved the technical-legal report of the signature verification process, which indicates that the group have failed to reach 5% of the electoral roll needed to call a referendum.

Until last Monday, spokesmen of YASunidos expressed their outrage by not having any response from the CNE, which is why they have drafted a letter to demand to be notified so they can begin with the processing of their appeals.

The spokesman further explained that if local resources fail, they will attend the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).

YASunidos will not give up on their mission.
