Food dispensers for stray dogs in Quito

Now stray dogs can feed themselves with dignity thanks to food dispensers placed in the historic center, Los Libertadores neighborhood and the Quitumbe bus station in the south of Quito.
Maria Carrera, of the shelter Friends of Isabella, began this work in Quito a month ago just after the success it had in Colombia and Uruguay.

Yolanda Alvarado is responsible for the “comedog,” she comes every day, from 11:00, and before leaving, she makes sure to leave enough food so dogs feed themselves until the next day. Moreover, in the morning she prepares at home a soup she gives to the dogs so they become “chubbier and happier.”

With the contribution that people deposit on top of the dispensers, they buy the food every 15 days and take animals that come with any sign of illness to the vet.

In neighborhoods where the “comedogs” are placed, one of the neighbors must be responsible for receiving donations, buy the food and keep it running. But it is the job of everybody monitoring there is always enough food.

Milagro, the project is further advanced. Currently there are 12 “comedogs” installed on the exteriors of homes, stores, parks and the Bus Terminal of the city. Motivated by the love he has for dogs, Romulo Velez began with the Barriguitas Llenas (full tummies)  project
